“Smart Shooting” and the Use of Environment The final stage of the fundamental training level is dedicated to the intelligent use of the surrounding environment and the practical application of shooting theory. Instructors refer to this approach as “smart shooting” — the ability to shoot intelligently by applying ballistic knowledge and understanding how to work with cover. The goal of this section is to teach the shooter to go beyond basic skills, experiment with tactics, and understand bullet behavior under different conditions. This module covers the core principles of shooting from cover, the method known as “Somali shooting” (blind or instinctive firing), the use of ricochets to hit targets, and the effect of vegetation on bullet trajectory. These concepts help the shooter operate effectively in real situations, where conditions are far from ideal.

8.1 Smart Shooting
In this video lesson, the instructor brings students to the final stage of the fundamental training level of the Ukrainian School of Firearms Training. The session focuses on the use of the environment and shooting theory as essential components of conscious, effective weapon employment. The instructor introduces the concept of “smart shooting” — an approach in which a shooter goes beyond classical training frameworks and combines practical skills with a deep understanding of shooting theory, the capabilities of their weapon system, and their own limitations. Emphasis is placed on becoming an educated shooter who is able to analyze, experiment, and make informed decisions rather than rely on rigid templates. The lesson follows a non-classical training format, which includes: two preparatory exercises, two training exercises, one evaluation (control) exercise.

8.2 Shooting from Cover (Cover Fire Drill) 1\4
In this video lesson, the instructor breaks down the first practical exercise of the session — firing from behind cover, with a strong focus on conditions that closely reflect real combat environments. Unlike sport shooting disciplines that rely on standardized covers with predefined openings and positions, the Ukrainian Firearms Training School emphasizes working with improvised cover typical of modern warfare: rubble, earth mounds, concrete, metal, and other irregular structures. The instructor explains the core classification of cover: hard cover (metal, concrete, stone), characterized by a high probability of bullet ricochets; soft cover (soil, wood, loose earth), which may be partially penetrable by incoming fire. Special attention is given to the correct distance from cover depending on its type, methods for minimizing the shooter’s visual profile, and increasing the safe zone from ricochets.

8.3 Somali-Style Shooting 2\4
In this video lesson, the instructor examines Somali-style shooting as a critically important component of modern firearms training, proven effective in real combat conditions — both in defense and in offense. It is emphasized that Somali-style shooting is not uncontrolled, unaimed fire, but a deliberate and controlled tool that allows a shooter to instinctively sense the direction of their weapon and gain precious time during close-contact engagements. At the fundamental level, this technique is used not as an end in itself, but as an intermediate stage that creates the conditions for a precise, aimed shot.

8.4 Horizontal and Vertical Ricochet 3\4
In this video lesson, the instructor provides an in-depth examination of ricochet as a practical engagement tool for defeating an enemy who is protected by cover and cannot be reached by direct fire. The scenario simulates an opponent tightly pressed against cover that cannot be penetrated by direct fire. The instructor explains why attempting to gain a direct angle without firing is extremely dangerous and justifies the use of ricochet-based engagement as a viable alternative.

8.5 Shooting Through Vegetation (“Stick Shot”) and Course Summary 4\4.
In this video lesson, the instructor examines the phenomenon of firing through vegetation, known as the “stick shot,” and concludes the Fundamental Level of the Ukrainian Firearms Training School. The instructor explains that a stick shot is the deflection of a bullet’s trajectory after passing through branches, bushes, or other vegetation, and confirms its existence both theoretically and through personal combat experience. A real-life example is provided in which this effect saved the instructor’s life during an enemy sniper counter-shot at long range.
